The Trends of Antimicrobial Susceptibility at Tertiary Care Hospital, Korea(1986-1993)

Abstract
Background
@EN During the past several years, the frequency and spectrum of antimicrobial resistant infections have increased in both hospitals and the general community. Therefore, it is important to understand exactly the changing patterns of
antimicrobial
resistant strains for the empirical selection of antimicrobial agents.
@ES Methods:
@EN We analyzed the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns at Kyung Hee Medical Center, during the years 1986-1993.
@ES Results:
@EN 1) The most frequently isolated strains of Gram-positive organism were Staphylococcus aureus, Coagulase-negative staphylococcus, Streptococcus and Enterococcus fecalis, and the most frequently isolated strains of Gram-negative organisms were
E.coli,
Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Serratia, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter and Proteus.
2) Antimicrobial resistance of all organisms has incleased as of 1993 compared to 1986.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN The empirical selection of antibimicrobial agents for some strains is possible when they high sensitivities to the drugs. However, as antimicrobial resistances of some strains are rapidly increasing, antimicrobial susceptibility test is
necessary
for the appropriate selection of antimicrobial agents. This will contribute to the reduction of resistant strains, health-care costs, and morbidity.
